A Common Sense Approach to Origins

The “Evidence of Great Age” Issue

In the previous discussion of the “Big Three,” we have shown that, beyond a reasonable doubt, God created the heavens and the earth. Natural causes cannot provide a viable explanation. But there is an important issue yet to be addressed which we will consider here.

There is an elephant in the room for those who believe in the Genesis account of creation. It is the undeniable fact that there is evidence of great age in our world and in our universe that is inconsistent with Bible dating. If the Bible is true, God created the heavens and the earth in six days roughly six thousand years ago (unless we find a way, as some have tried) to fit billions of years into the Genesis account of creation.

I am what is referred to as “young earth.” I differ from many young earth proponents in that I acknowledge there is evidence of great age in our world and in our universe. This is not a “flat earth” or a geocentric universe view of reality. This is a “God created for a purpose and that purpose must be factored into everything we know or believe we know about the universe” view of reality. This is a “When you see a rocket ship you look for an explanation for its existence more reasonable than natural causes” view of reality.

After years of research looking for the truth about origins, I do not accept that billions of years can be fit into the Genesis account of creation. I have considered all of the alternative explanations with no reason not to accept them if they make sense, but I have not found one that does. I will explain why in the next section on Bible Dating.

If I am right, then God created the universe with evidence of age far exceeding the “days” of the Genesis account. I think he did that for a reason that makes perfect sense when we factor in what the Bible says. I address this view more fully in the “Honest Deception” section.

Some have said that making our world and our universe look billions of years old when they are only thousands of years old would be dishonest and unworthy of the God of the Bible. That argument is also covered in the Honest Deception section.

At the end of the day, every view of origins and every view of the age of the universe has fantastic elements that are virtually impossible for us to believe. That includes the Genesis account of creation and that includes the big bang theory and that includes the theory of evolution.

Our choice is not between something that makes perfect sense and something that is too fantastic for words. Our choice is between something that is too fantastic for words and something else that is also too fantastic for words. Once we recognize that no view of origins has more “too fantastic for words” elements than the natural causes view, we can begin to appreciate all the majesty and wonder of the creation and recognize the only view that truly makes sense is, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
